Austin's vegan scene is booming with creativity and innovation, offering a diverse range of dishes that are as exciting as they are delicious. In a city known for its eclectic culture and progressive mindset, it's no surprise that Austin has become a haven for vegans and plant-based enthusiasts. From savory street eats to upscale dining destinations, Austin's restaurants are pushing the boundaries of vegan cuisine, redefining what it means to eat green in the Lone Star State. Here are 6 must-try vegan options, and a special honorable mention:
Vegan fine dining restaurants are few and far between, and Fabrik is guaranteed to impress herbivores and omnivores alike. They have a seasonal rotating menu that offers a 5-course option for $70 per person or an upgraded 7-course option for $85 per person. Either way, this is a dining experience worth budgeting for. We enjoyed the 5-course menu (Autumn 2023), and although the portions are smaller than your average restaurant, with the pacing of the experience and flavors that are so rich and satisfying, we found we were completely content by the end of the meal. Seriously, the Gochujang mixed mushrooms were divine. And if you’re in the mood for a little extra indulgence, opt for the 7 course! Oh, and make sure to snag a reservation - seating is very limited in their intimate space.
Honestly, Fabrik is deserving of its own blog post - coming soon!
#2 - Rebel Cheese. Coming in at a close second, Rebel Cheese. I truly think this place could make a believer out of any vegan-cheese-naysayer. The balsamic fig and walnut cheese is chefs kiss culinary perfection. I am a huge sucker for vegan brunch, and as soon as I saw the menu I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Just thinking about the benedict right now is making my mouth water. This is a deli-style bistro where you’ll order at the front counter before grabbing a seat. We arrived pretty early on a Sunday, and inside seats did fill up because it was rainy, so if the weather isn’t great I definitely recommend getting there closer to opening.
#3 - Bouldin Creek Cafe. If you're looking for a taste of Austin's quirky charm, Bouldin Creek Cafe is where it's at. This eclectic restaurant was a great spot for breakfast, and definitely delivered the “keep austin weird” vibes. The food was delicious, the server was delightful; she hooked us up with some insider recommendations for local businesses like Paper Work, which we really enjoyed. It’s an easy walk from Bouldin Creek over to South Congress where you can get your shopping done at some of the best local boutiques, and capture that obligatory pic with the "I love you so much" mural.
#4 - Ramen Tatsu-Ya. Looking for a buzzing local hotspot? Ramen Tatsu-Ya is the place to be. There are multiple locations around Austin, but we checked out the one nestled in East Austin on 6th Street. Now, if you're in a rush, maybe save this one for later. The line was out the door, and it took 45+ minutes to get our two ramen bowls. But if you're up for a wait and craving some killer ramen, you're in for a treat! Their vegan Nu Skool ramen bowl is incredible, and if you want to spice it up a bit they have a curry option as well. This place came highly recommended by some friends who live in Austin, and it definitely delivered, just remember good things come to those who wait!
#5 - Mr. Natural. Mr. Natural is a not-so-hidden gem serving up an incredible array of plant-based breakfast classics, baked goods, and Mexican fare. There were so many options it was difficult to choose, but the breakfast bagel sandwich really hit the spot. It wasn’t crowded inside when we were there for breakfast, and I’m always excited to find a good breakfast spot where you’re not fighting the crowds. It seemed like their catering and to-go orders were popular options though, they had a steady stream of pick-ups. Next time we’re in Austin we’ll definitely be stopping by to try some of the lunch options.
#6 - Bangers. Despite some controversial Yelp reviews regarding its vegan-friendliness, rest assured, Bangers does offer a vegan option—the portabella mushroom sausage. Just request it sans aioli, and voila, you've got the perfect pairing for nice cold beer. While it might not be the most mind-blowing vegan meal in Austin, and I'd say it's still worth a visit (even if it’s just for shiitake mushroom "bacon” 🤤). This spot isn't just your average hotdog joint —it's massive, and the ambience really captures the Texas vibe. With multiple buildings surrounding a sprawling beer garden, there's plenty of seating, indoors and out. Plus, ordering from your table is a piece of cake with their convenient QR code system.
Honorable mention:
Voodoo Doughnut. I couldn't possibly leave out Voodoo Doughnut—it is a must-try after all! They've got these insanely fluffy vegan yeast-raised donuts that are just too good to resist. I highly recommend leaving room in your "dessert stomach" for the Portland Cream, with its Bavarian cream filling and chocolate coating…it’s simply to die for.
Bon appétit!
